❖What is a Read-A-Thon? The LAES Read-A-Thon is a PTA sponsored fundraiser that encourages lifelong reading habits among students. During the fundraiser, students aim to read as much as possible, logging their time spent reading while friends and family make donations to support their efforts (for example, $0.10 per minute). Read-A-Thons are especially beneficial for schools because they 1) advance literacy, 2) boost academic performance, 3) cultivate a love of reading and 4) bring a community together.
❖ Where do the proceeds go? This year all funds collected during the Read-A-Thon fundraiser will benefit Louise Archer by providing financial assistance for school beautification efforts in collaboration with the Get2Green committee, meeting the needs of library and reading specialists, as well as various PTA-funded activities and support such as field trips, staff grants, and more.
❖ Do I have to participate? Student participation is not required but encouraged. The more students read, the more fun prizes they can earn. Special awards will be presented to both the student and the class that reads the most! Please note that collecting donations is not required to participate.
❖ How does it work? This year’s Read-A-Thon lasts 15 days, during which students track their reading minutes outside school and seek donations. Donations can be structured as “per minute,” based on how many minutes a student reads (for instance, $0.10 per minute), or as a one-time fixed amount. All proceeds—100%—directly contribute to enhancing Louise Archer!
❖ When do students begin and end logging reading time? Students may begin logging minutes at 6:00 am on Monday, March 3rd. Read-A-Thon ends at midnight on Monday, March 17.
❖ What reading counts? Any reading done outside of school counts, including being read to by another student or an adult. If one student reads to another, both receive credit for the minutes. Books, e-books, picture books, textbooks, graphic novels, magazines and newspapers all count towards minutes. *Please note: audio books do not count
❖ How do I register? The registration instructions are straightforward, making it quick and hassle-free, and it should take less than 2 minutes of your time. Open your browser to www.read-a-thon.com/reader, enter your event code provided on your take-home flyer (contact readathon@louisearcherpta.org if you can not find your event code), select the student teacher, and then search for your child’s name to activate your account. That’s all.
❖ How to track reading minutes? Go to your student’s private profile management page (https://www.read-a-thon.com/readers/login) and follow the prompts to add minutes.
❖ How do I collect sponsors and donations? With the Read-a-thon.com online platform, students can reach a broader audience. By collecting online donations through Read-A-Thon’s secure credit card payment processor, you can extend your fundraising reach to donors around the world. This means that students can receive support from friends and family no matter where they’re located. Students can request a per minute donation or a one-time fixed donation. Donors have 10 days at the conclusion of the Read-a-thon to submit their payments.
❖ What prizes are available this year? The PTA will provide awards/prizes for top readers, including gift cards and other exciting items. Additionally, our online platform (Read-A-Thon.com) features a dedicated prize store. Alongside Louise Archer’s earnings, student readers will earn 15% of their individual donations to spend in Read-a-thon’s prize store, where they can choose from over 200 toys, games, school supplies, and books. Here’s a preview of what’s available: https://www.read-a-thon.com/readers/prize_catalog.
❖ When will I receive my prizes? Prizes will be delivered to each student’s class approximately 2-3 weeks after the Read-A-Thon concludes.
