It's not too late to become a member of the PTA. Individual memberships are $10, or $15 for a couple. Let your voice be heard at the PTA meetings and support our kids!
Don't forget, the first PTA meeting of the year is Monday, September 26 at 9:30 am. We hope to see you there!
The Sunshine Times is Back
Kick-Off Meeting October 12 - Submissions Due November 18
The Sunshine Times is a student newspaper intended to be a creative outlet for budding writers, photographers, and artists. All students are encouraged to participate!
There will be a meeting on Wednesday, October 12 in the cafeteria from 6:00 to 6:30 pm to review submission guidelines and share creative story ideas. Students and families, especially those unfamiliar with the newspaper, are encouraged to attend.
Students can write about school or class activities, vacations, local events, sports, travel/book/movie/music/art reviews, interviews, puzzles, Spanish-language columns, poetry, cartoons, advice columns -- all ideas are welcome! There will be two editions of the paper for the 2016-17 school year. The first edition will be published mid-December and the second edition in mid-May.
To see previous editions of the newspaper, click here and sign into your blackboard account.
Submissions for the December edition are due November 18. Please send all submissions and any questions to the Sunshine Times.
Louise Archer Student Directory
Do you want to be included in the Louise Archer directory? We are using a web-based system to allow parents to verify or edit their own directory listings. You should have received an email from the PTA directory team. Please respond to it by verifying your information, it should take no more than five minutes.
If you submitted an opt-out form and selected the "Comprehensive Opt-Out Option" or "Choice A," your child will not be included in the directory. If this wasn't your intent, please email us. We can only add you to the directory with your written consent.
Fundraising for Scholarships
A recent Louise Archer graduate is raising funds to donate to Louise Archer Elementary School. The PTA hosts technology programs run by Fairfax Collegiate. One class is called EV3 Robotics, where they teach you how to program and build a robot. The other class is called Minecraft Modding, where students use computer programming to make modifications to the Minecraft game. Each class costs $264. If we reach our goal of $792, three needy students will have the opportunity to sign up for one of these after-school programs in the winter session. Please click here for more information and to consider donating.
Before- and After-School Classes
Registration for before- and after-school classes will continue through 9:00 pm on September 29. Fencing, After School All Stars, and Minecraft Modding are currently on a waitlist. We have a few classes in danger of cancellation due to low enrollment: Clay Club (with our very own Ms. Edwards!), Builders (K-2 and 3-6), Photography, Sports and Games (K-3), CreARTive (Tuesdays), Guitar Club, Yoga, and Science Exploratorium. If your children are already registered for one of these classes, encourage their friends to sign up too! Please contact us if you have any questions about these classes or any others.
Louise Archer 5K & Fun Run 10/15
Registration is now open for the LA 5K and Fun Run. Be sure to register by October 2 to guarantee a t-shirt and get early-bird pricing.
There is one more week for your child to submit a design for the t-shirt. One drawing will be chosen for the front of the race t-shirt that all runners receive. Your child's drawing could be worn by hundreds of people! The design should be on plain white paper in black ink and given to your child's teacher or brought to the front office and put in the LA 5K t-shirt contest folder. All drawings are due by Friday, September 30.
Please consider volunteering for the LA 5K and Fun Run. We need volunteers for the race route and packet pick-ups.
BE A FAMILY CHEERLEADER
Get your family's name on the back of the race t-shirt by becoming a family cheerleader. Take advantage of this no-fuss way to support the PTA and donate $250 to become a family cheerleader.
Encourage your student to follow his or her inner artist and create a work for the National PTA's Reflections contest. The theme this year is "What is Your Story?" and categories include visual arts, film, music, literature, photography, and dance.
The work can be as elaborate or minimalist as the student desires. All participants are recognized with a medal during an art show and reception at Louise Archer in the fall. For details, please visit the Reflections web page. Entries are due Wednesday, October 12, in the entry box in the library.
Apply for the Student Council
The SCA (Student Council) is a group of students at Louise Archer who demonstrate strong leadership qualities, act as role models in the school, and are willing and eager to help out their school and community. This year we are excited to build a strong group of these students. If you feel like you have these qualities and are in 4th-6th grade, please fill out an application and turn it in to your teacher by Tuesday, Sept. 27th. If you have any questions, please contact Mrs. Ruminski.
